Another Shooting: Parkland, Florida - Robin Chodak

Another Shooting: Parkland, Florida

Tragedy Again!

Two weeks have passed since the Parkland School shooting in Florida. It’s hard to believe I am writing another blog about a massive shooting.

The last one was about the Las Vegas shooting on October 1st 2017, only 4 months ago.  We still grieve the Columbine shooting in 1999, the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012 and others.

Everyone grieves in different ways. If you have lost a loved one by suicide like I have, this may have triggered your own grief once again. This is normal, experience your emotions but be sure to not stay “stuck”.

Are you personally affected?

Perhaps you are reading this and you were personally affected by the tragedy. I extend my heartfelt and sincerest condolences to you. Mere words seem meaningless when you are in deep mental anguish. I remember those days in 2005 when I found my husband dead in our basement.  My thoughts are with you and I send you love. My prayer is that you surround yourself with those who love you and that you will get the help needed to process your grief.

As a country, we must begin to change and do things differently. How many times are we going to say, “another shooting” before something changes?  We cannot become apathetic and do nothing. I applaud the students and families that are speaking up and letting their voices be heard. This is the beginning of the change needed.

I am a woman on a journey of recovery after the suicide of my husband in 2005. It has been a long voyage, but I was able to create a new identity and find happiness again after much hard work. I hope that I can help you along this path, too.
