Get Ready for A Burning Bowl Ceremony
What is a Burning Bowl Ceremony? It’s a tradition practiced in Unity and spiritual communities around the country. It starts by bringing like-minded people together in a sacred setting. The purpose is to reflect over the past year and metaphorically burn away any thoughts, habits or behaviors in your life that no longer serve you.
What is necessary to participate in one of these ceremonies? An open heart and a listening spirit. I participate in one each year at a Unity church. It may not be possible for you to do so and that’s OK. You can do it at home!
What you need to do is:
- Gather a paper and pen
- Find a quiet space where no one will disturb you for 15-30 minutes
- Play meditation music if that is appealing or remain in silence if you prefer
- Light a candle
While in your quiet place prepare by doing the following:
- Close your eyes
- Take a deep breath in as you count to 5
- Hold your breath for the count of 5
- Let it out slowing as you count to 5
- Do this three times
- Let your forehead soften
- Feel the space between your eyes soften and release the tension
- Drop your shoulders and feel yourself completely relax
Meditate for the Burning Bowl Ceremony
Spend some time in mediation. You will then be relaxed and ready to listen to spirit speak to you.
Ask your higher power to bring to your mind the things that you want to let go of from your past. They are things that no longer serve you or those that have caused disharmony in your life.
Perhaps someone comes to your mind and you feel anger. Write their name on the paper so you can let go of the anger you hold against him or her. Or perhaps you realize you must forgive someone. Maybe you have deceived someone and you must confess your wrong actions or words. Whatever is coming up in your mind, don’t ignore it or push it away. This is the voice of spirit and you must listen if you want to let go of hindrances from your past. If you want to start the new-year with a clean slate and be emotionally healthy you must release them.
When something comes to your mind write it on the paper.
Review the paper as often as you like and set your intention to let go of those things that have held you back or kept you stuck. Intend to not bring them with you into the next year.
Mark your Calendar
In the comfort of your home, join with me in this ceremony and others at the Unity Church in Delray Beach, Florida on January 5th, 2022 at 7:00 PM p.m. Don’t worry if you can’t make it..you can do it anytime and it is as equally powerful!
If you have a fireplace, light it and stand near it. If not, light a candle and place it in your kitchen sink. Your safety is important.
Read your written list out loud
- Trust your higher power to give you strength
- Say out loud, “I willingly now let go of all those things that no longer serve me”
- Then let the paper burn, either throw it into the fireplace or hold it over the lit candle
- Watch the flames consume it and believe that you are free from those things
Be open to the good that is waiting for you!
Say, “And so it is”. As you say it, you are joining with many others and your energy goes out into the universe to make it so.
The New Year is now ready for you to set your goals and work towards them. Trust that your higher power will guide and direct you to your highest good.
