What do you think about Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the U.S. and other places around the world. It is considered a day of romance, and it’s certainly a big money making business. Restaurants are happy because they fill-up and candy and card sales are higher than normal. Even jewelry stores make money. See the spending trends here. You may have been one of those people who received an engagement ring on that day or had a wedding! Valentine’s Day is usually a good day for most people.
Perhaps not for you and for a number of reasons. If you are grieving due to loss or you are simply without a partner and you wish you had one it can be a very hard day for you. If you lost your lover than you probably wish this day never existed.
Believe me, I understand those feelings; I lost my husband to suicide in 2005 and my latest husband died unexpectedly in 2019.
A New Perspective!
I speak this message to myself today.
I would like to speak directly to you and suggest you look at this day with a new perspective. I want you to reframe your thinking about it. Valentine’s Day is a day of Love. Well, that doesn’t need to change for you. What you can do is devote the day to “loving” yourself! Therefore, begin to think of yourself as “lovable.”
Once you change your thoughts, circumstances in your life will change. That’s what I did in my recovery and that is the reason I can live an excellent life. Any one who is successful must change any false beliefs or negative self-talk.
So, don’t let this day get you down. Instead, look it as a day for you to do whatever you choose. Buy yourself a box of chocolates or an ice-cream cone. Get your self a massage, do something that feels good to you. I would ordinarily suggest taking yourself to dinner, but I wouldn’t suggest it on Valentine’s Day because it will mostly be couples. Don’t put yourself in situations that can upset you.
If you follow me you know that my message for those in grief is to “Be Gentle with yourself”, thus the reason I wrote the book. “Be Gentle with Me, I’m Grieving.”

So, begin to reframe your thoughts about the day and let love fill your heart with the wonderful person that is inside of you! Say to yourself, “I love me”.
And remember, the love for your loved one is always with you!
